Land O’ Lakes, the dairy company known for their butter products is extremely transparent with what they are doing with their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report easily found on their website. In 2021 part of what they did to work towards their ESG goals and sustainability practices was sequestering nearly 200,000 metric tons of carbon through Truterra’s carbon offset program. They are planning to continue this carbon offsetting in future years as well.
In addition to reducing their carbon emissions they also have their “Dairy 2025 Commitment” program to help their farmers reduce their environmental footprint. They also have established the “Land O’ Lakes Sustainability Council” which meets monthly to drive their own ESG goals as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This council has come up with the goal and commitment to being net zero by 2050, to being 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2030, and to reducing landfill waste by 50% by 2030.
These ESG goals are derived from the United Nations SDGs where Land O’ Lakes has picked 5 of the 17 to focus on. The 5 that they have chosen include zero hunger, clean water and sanitation, decent work and economic growth, responsible consumption and production, and climate action. They also provide their specific ESG goals which fall under the SDGs and also the target year and progress.
Overall from my research, it seems as though Land O’ Lakes is really doing a lot to further their sustainability and are also being transparent about what they’re doing and why. As a company Land O’ Lakes is doing a lot to better the world and decrease their environmental impact. I also hold a lot of respect for them and their transparency and their ESG goals that they have put into place for themselves based on the UN SDGs.
