BIO CHARMS!

In # 6: GMO vs Bioengineered Labeling by AnthonyLeave a Comment

The product that I found is quite popular. Almost all of us have had this cereal at some points. Lucky charms is a cereal that has been around forever. This cereal is considered to be one of the best ever made and is one of the most sold cereals. However if parents read the box more carefully this product may not be as popular. Lucky charms has many things used in the cereal that have to be labeled as bioengineered. These ingredients include fillers and preservatives such as corn starch, corn syrup, dextrose, modified starch (corn), and sugar. All of these may be genetically engineered or derived from genetically engineered crops. However these are all considered generally safe by the FDA. Due to regulations General Mills is required to state that this food contains bioengineered food ingredients. General Mills follows this rule by not having the bioengineered seal, but instead by hiding the words “may contain bioengineered ingredients”  underneath the nutrition facts in small lettering. while this product does tell the consumer that it has bioengineered food ingredients it does it in a terrible way. Making it almost impossible to find unless you scan and read the entire back of the box.
