Mars is globally known for their candy and pet products. As of 2017, they have launched a sustainability program that primarily focuses on the people they interact with and the use of cleaner energies. Following in the footsteps of the UN’s Sustainability Goals, Mars has put in billions into converting themselves into a cleaner company.
It’s important to understand what the UN’s Sustainability Goals look like. One of Mars’ goals is to use cleaner energy, or number seven on the UN’s Sustainability Goals. This means that they want to ensure that clean energy clean energy development should grow more than it is now to provide energy to those who don’t have it currently. Mars’ next goal relates to eight on the list that states more people, globally, need access to formal jobs that give social protections.
Mars has a goal to have net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and help farmers produce more crop while cutting water use. To combat emissions, they have signed with Science Based Target Initiatives, an organization that works directly with companies to incorporate sustainable practices in their operations. Another goal attached to their energy goal is their implementation of water conservation. This goal aims to work with farmers to use water efficiently with innovative farm practices to help preserve the communities water supply while positively effecting yields.
Mars aims to support social protections in their work force and sources using The Five Principles: quality, responsibility, mutuality, efficiency, freedom. This is the cornerstone of their Sustainable in a Generation Plan to improve the lives of over a million people in the production chain. Part of this goal follows the first point of the UN’s Sustainability Goals to reduce poverty by increasing the income of the farmers. Mainly, they want to focus on providing opportunities that will ensuring basic human rights and empowering women to work.
