In # 6: GMO vs Bioengineered Labeling by Duong2 Comments

A food product I found that contains the “Bioengineered” label is cup noodles, from brands like Nissin and Maruchan. It has been around for decades, and many people consume them. It is not very healthy however and contains a lot of sodium and carbohydrates while lacking in protein, vitamins and fiber.
The USDA requires that products like this have the “Bioengineered” label or statement, which it has. However, it is not highlighted in any way, so people won’t normally notice it. It also doesn’t specify which ingredient in the list is bioengineered, so consumers cannot tell which ingredient is genetically modified. Overall, it does the job, just very poorly.

  1. You brought up a good point that even if a consumer knew what the term “bioengineered” meant, there is no way to know what ingredients in a certain product are genetically modified. It would be helpful to consumers to list or note which ingredient or ingredients in a product were genetically modified. Overall, being more transparent with ingredients and where they come from would be more beneficial to the consumer.

  2. I’m not surprised that they aren’t highlighting that their product is made with GMOs. Still, it would be more fair to the consumers if they made it slightly easier to find so that their consumers can make fully informed decisions without reading the entire ingredient list.
