Fairtrade Chocolate

In # 5: Organic and ethical food labels by AlexLeave a Comment

Tony’s Chocolate is labeled as Fairtrade and B Corp. The Fairtrade label means that their ingredients have been sourced from producers that meet strict guidelines that emphasize fair international trade.

Tony’s Chocolate isn’t quiet about their opinion that they have better ethics than most mainstream chocolate companies. Their motto is “Crazy about chocolate, serious about people”. In their full-sized chocolate bar packaging, they have a page covering the unfair working conditions and slavery that is still happening in West Africa on cocoa farms and what their company is doing about it.

Fairtrade is a certification given by Fairtrade International to products that meet various economic, environmental, and social criteria. These include the Fairtrade Minimum Price to protect producers against falling prices, along with a Fairtrade Premium, which gives farmers and workers additional money to invest in improving their communities and businesses. Its environmental criteria also include responsible water and waste management that preserves biodiversity and soil fertility. Fairtrade prohibits the use of all GMOs but does not require organic certification, but higher Fairtrade Minimum Prices are available for organically grown products. Fairtrade’s social criteria are different for small businesses and large farms, but both are required to have non-discriminatory employment practices. Forced labor and child labor are also both prohibited by Fairtrade standards.
