Tilapia Fillet

In # 5: Organic and ethical food labels by Axl1 Comment

365 Whole Foods Market has several products with ethical labels. One of these is their tilapia fillet. This product uses a “responsibly farmed” label on the front of the bags. To be a responsibly farmed product means to use practices considerate to environmental sustainability, animal health, the well being of farmers, food safety, and supply chain traceability (GGN certified farming). Meaning the

products carrying the label must be following certain practices that benefit all aspects of the farming cycle. GGN is the organization in charge of this label. Based in the UK, they are strong advocates for the idea of transparency when their products are made. GGN allows for plant and animal products to carry their label to ensure customers that their food follows good practices that benefit them and the environment.

The GGN label comes with a 13-digit code that allows people to search up the farms that their label is associated with. Using their website, anyone can type in a farm’s code to learn more about their operation, or they can search categories of the products they desire. These categories go from broad, like aquaculture, fruits and vegetables, and flowers and ornamentals, to the species of those listed. The label is prominent in Europe with over 100 aquaculture farms that carry the GGN label for “responsible farmed.”

  1. I like the idea of being able to search for a code and automatically knowing more about where their food came from. I’d like to see this label become more popular in the U.S. It would be fun to find out more about my foods’ production.
