Beef, Chicken, Pork, Soy?

In # 4: Food allergens in the news by Wyatt

A Dearborn, MI sausage producer has had to recall nearly one ton of sausage after a case of cross contamination was positively identified. The Dearborn Sausage Company has issued a recall for their “Brookside Brand Fully Cooked Natural Casing Beef Wieners” and “Brookside Brand Natural Casing Fully Cooked Wieners”. The primary allergen of concern for cross contamination is soy protein, but one batch is being recalled due to undeclared pork in the product.  This can be not only a concern for allergens but also for different religious reasons. This prompted quick action from the USDA and local authorities.

This allergen contamination was noticed early on and was produced just last month on August 7th, and has already been traced to grocery stores in Ohio. Because of this early detection there have been no reactive cases to the potential allergens that were contaminating the sausages. The USDA also identified the establishment which these products originated and were able to add this into the product description for consumers to easily identify the products included. These descriptions also included the lot code for the impacted products and what potential allergen or undeclared ingredient was identified in that lot. This early detection and detailed description have also likely kept people from consuming product ingredients they otherwise would avoid for health or religious reasons.
